| Position Summary: | Planning and Landscape Architecture is a diverse and interdisciplinary department with several applied programs in planning and design, including a professionally accredited Bachelor’s in Landscape Architecture (BLA) and Master of Science in Urban and Regional Planning (MSURPL). We have a legacy of foundational work in ecological restoration, design, and management, and are interested in advancing the theory and practice of the field within a global context. We seek a candidate to develop an internationally recognized and globally transcendent research program in Ecological Restoration and Design. We are particularly interested in candidates who can work collaboratively to address complex problems involving international environmental challenges, including studies spanning disciplinary boundaries and involving social-ecological dynamics. Expectations of the successful candidate include excellence in research and graduate training, engagement in interdisciplinary and collaborative research, establishment of an extramurally funded research program, University and professional service, public outreach, and skilled teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. |
| Principal Duties: | We seek someone with training and experience in both landscape architecture and ecological restoration. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the teaching, research, and service missions of the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels is required, including within the professional landscape architecture program, as well as mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students. Their teaching program will help students develop important knowledge, skills, and ethical standards of practice. This position will meet a critical need of our accredited BLA degree. We expect this position to teach core courses including 1) Plants and Ecology in Design – a BLA planting design studio course, 2) international aspects of ecosystem restoration course, and 3) other courses contributing to our BLA, our Landscape and Urban Studies undergraduate major, and our graduate degrees, typically 3-4 courses per year. Some of these courses will also appeal to students in other degree programs across the university. This position provides scholarship around critical and complex socio-ecological issues during a period of remarkable global environmental change. A faculty member with this expertise can provide leadership and synergy with other faculty and staff on campus. It will allow us to expand teaching around issues of high interest and importance to students at UW-Madison and expand important research areas that are highly salient in our fields. Candidate will be expected to obtain extramural funding and engage in scholarship in areas of specialization leading to peer-reviewed publications at the national and international levels, contributing to global initiatives such as the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. They will also partner with national and international organizations such as the Society for Ecological Restoration and the Ecological Society of America, in addition to restoration and conservation agencies in Madison and other communities within Wisconsin. |

| Degree and Area of Specialization: | Two (2) degrees are required: 1) PhD in Ecology, Landscape Architecture, or closely related field; and 2) a Bachelors or higher in Landscape Architecture from a professionally accredited Landscape Architecture program. |

| Additional Information: | In addition to the professionally accredited programs, the Department of Planning and Landscape Architecture, within the College of Letters and Sciences, hosts an undergraduate degree in Landscape and Urban Studies, and research degrees in Landscape Architecture (MSLA) and Urban and Regional Planning (PhD). The Department also houses the Earth Partnership Program and several research labs that engage with the community and environment. The Department, along with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum, have been leaders in experimenting with, and advancing restoration ecology since Aldo Leopold, John Curtis, and others.
