Galen Newman
2017 CELA Excellence in Research and Creative Work – Junior Level
Galen Newman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning at Texas A&M University. His research interests are in urban decline and regeneration, land use science, spatial modeling, and resilient community-scale design.
His nominator wrote: “Galen’s impressive scholarly record includes an ambitious grant seeking activity ($5.2 million overall), and a publication record of 22 peer review articles (4.8 times greater than the national average for junior faculty in Landscape Architecture).
A colleague had this to say: “One of the most innovative projects that Dr. Newman is working on currently involves the development of a GIS-based model for predicting which land parcels are likely to become vacant in the future. Not only will this model have a significant impact on the literature, it will also have a substantial practical applicability. The project represents a noteworthy advancement of knowledge.”
