2021 CELA Class of Fellows
The Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA) Academy of Fellows inducted two members during the 2021 CELA Conference, 100 + 1 | Resilience on Friday, March 19, 2021. The CELA Academy of Fellows welcomed Professors Mark Boyer and Patsy Eubanks Owens to its membership. They were inducted by Stephanie Rolley, FCELA, the Chair of the CELA Academy of Fellows.
The Academy of Fellows recognizes outstanding landscape architecture educators who advance the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture’s mission. Membership in the Academy of Fellows represents the highest level of achievement within the CELA membership and honors a faculty member’s accomplishments in teaching, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service.
Professor Patsy Eubanks Owens is a Professor in the Landscape Architecture + Environmental Design Program and the Associate Dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis.
For over 30 years, Owens has committed her personal and professional energies to advance landscape architecture education. Owens has led groundbreaking research in community participation and adolescent inclusion in the design of and access to built environments. In addition, she has numerous limited distribution reports, videos, and public exhibits relating to her community-based projects.
Stephanie Rolley said of Professor Owens: “Patsy engages her students in community-based efforts that elicit responses contributing to knowledge expansion within the discipline of landscape architecture. Her students gain hands-on experience working with communities. She continuously inspires budding landscape architects to reach out, listen, serve, and produce.”
Professor Mark Boyer is the Director and Reich Teaching Professor in the Robert Reich School in the Louisiana State University College of Art and Design. For 16 years, Boyer worked to establish the landscape architecture program at the University of Arkansas as a first-class national design program. Boyer’s excellence in teaching was recognized at the University of Arkansas by the Tau Sigma Delta honor society students with the Silver Medal for distinction in teaching.
Boyer has served CELA members through numerous positions, first twice as 2nd Vice President, and then inducted as President during the historic 2017 CELA Conference in China.
Stephanie Rolley said of Professor Boyer: “Mark’s nominators noted that his penchant for caretaking the long-term health of others—whether persons, programs or the profession—has made his legacy one of lasting impact. In 2001, the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture recognized him with the Award of Recognition for teaching, research, and service and now we welcome him to the Academy of Fellows.”
